About the event
Lo-Hi-Lo
Lo Hi Lo are a new Stroud-based 3-piece channelling their love of noisy melodic indie, weird folk and fuzzy guitars into loud-quiet slivers of lo-fi music. Contrasting the gentler side of Grizzly Bear, Redhouse Painters and Richard Dawson with the sharper overdriven tones of The Vaselines, Grandaddy and Sonic Youth.
Spanish Castles
aka James Summerfield returns after a few years of side-project distraction. There’s a new line up and a 7th studio album, THEM (Say ‘Aargh’ Records 2023)
James’ music career began in the band Buick 6, later renamed The Toques. They recorded 2 John Peel. James would go on to release 7 studio albums and played with the likes of Alistair Roberts, John Renbourne, Scott Matthews and Joanna Newsom.
“Over the last few years, I have acquired some new musicians: Robin Murphy (Guitar, bass and vocals) who has his own project called silver kites. Joe Edwards (Guitar and bass), Lydia Pickering on keys, guitar and Alex Sones on drums. They can all sing and they can all play any instrument, so I’m very blessed to have them.
Initially, I wasn’t looking to form a new project-however, these musicians are so talented that it felt wrong to continue under my name. I also feel I need a change as I’ve been doing this since 2003. If I’m being honest, the older I get, the more pressure I feel too write songs and keep everyone happy. I’m therefore encouraging them to have more autonomy over the songwriting and instrumentation side of things.
We are currently working on an album but still rehearsing James Summerfield songs; mostly the ones from the album ‘them’ since they Contributed to a lot of that project.
Spanish castles is sounding quite psychedelic 70s which is a slight diversion from my usual go to genre. Still the same songwriting and themes, but more experimental and grooves.
In other words, I think we’re having a bit more fun with the songs.”
